Project Description
"Aufstieg durch Bildung - Offene Hochschulen" (Promotion through education - open universities) is the title of the competition organised by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (wettbewerb-offene-hochschulen-bmbf), which, at the same time, serves as a programme for the eradicating of existing hurdles within the German education system - especially for non-traditional students and other specific target groups.
The joint project "Berufsintegrierte Studiengänge zur Weiterqualifizierung im Sozial- und Gesundheitswesen" (work-integrated degree programmes for further qualification in social services and healthcare) – "BEST WSG" has been among the top 26 projects to receive recognition nationwide since October 2011. In the 1st funding phase, which ended in March 2015, and in cooperation with the Fachhochschule der Diakonie (FHdD - Diakonie University of Applied Sciences), the University of Applied Labour Studies (HdBA) concentrated on improving structural permeability between parts of the vocational and higher-education systems. The creation of innovative, part-time study programmes at the FHdD aimed to break down existing barriers when beginning or continuing a degree. The HdBA focused on concomitant research specific to the target group, with an emphasis on foreign skilled workers, those changing careers, and women interested in leading positions in the social and health sector.
In the second funding phase (April 2015 – September 2017) the focus was on the development of academic qualification programmes for working people. Part of the project at the University of Applied Labour Studies (HdBA) in Mannheim will carry out academic concomitant research, and also develop qualification programmes for certain target groups (migration counsellors, human resources managers and women interested in leading positions).
