The Education, Career and Employment Counselling degree course qualifies participants for tasks in career counselling and orientation (focusing on career counselling), the counselling and care of employable persons who find themselves in diffcult life situations (focusing on casemanagement) as well as for the qualified counselling of people with disabilities in terms of participation in working life (focusing on participation in working life) in the employment agencies, joint institutions or social security providers and companies.
The degree course can be taken at both campuses.
Information on the Degree Programme
Set up and Structure
The course begins on 1st September of the year and it takes three years to complete a degree course.
It is divided into:
- five on-campus terms, each of four months
- four practical terms inbetween, each of which also goes four months.
The dissertation is written in the last placement(Placement D).

On-campus term
The on-campus terms at the university consist of different modules in business law, law and social law. Every module covers a thematically related subject area with coordinated qualification objectives, as well as content relevant for qualification. All modules are generally completed with an examination.
Practical term
The practical term normally takes place in a regional Employment Agency or in a regional job centre . During this practical phase, students should apply content from their university lectures in a workng context and reflect on the experience this gives them. In this way, students develop their own way of working, which prepares them well for an unlimited working contract with a national employment agency when they have finished their degree.
On the organisational side, students receive support from a tutor, who is assigned by the respective employment agency and is in close contact with the university. Teaching staff at the university prepare assignments to be completed during the practical term. The HdBA is responsible for supervising the students content-wise at this time. The effort required to work on such an assignment in this practical phase corresponds to that of one module at university. The assignment content is laid out in the Study and Examination Regulations for each of the degree programmes.
Service Learning
During practical term B, students have a one-week placement at a non-profit organisation or sponsor to build on their social and personal skills.
Work placement abroad
In the third practical term (C), students receive a variety of assignments, depending on their elected subject. For this part of the course, the university recommends doing their work placement abroad or in a company for a different perspective and for international experience.
Bachelordissertation
In practical term D, students write their Bachelordissertation. Students will have six weeks off during this period in order to write this academic assignment.
In both the first terms, the modules in both degree programmes are close to identical. From the third on-campus term, the programmes have different modules. Students then specialise in on-campus terms 4 and 5. One of the following subjects can be taken, depending on the degree course:

While studying, you receive a monthly salary of €1,820.
You have 30 days' holiday per calendar year.
There are various extras, such an annual special payment, capital-forming benefits as well as a company pension scheme.
Upon completion of your degree, you will receive an unlimited contract with the National Employment Agency and will begin at activity level IV (TV-BA - labour contract EA). You also have to opportunity to apply beyond your own agency for other interesting positions at employment agencies nationwide or to job centres .
Your degree in Education, Career and Employment Counselling prepares you perfectly for work in the field of advisory services. You can go into positions in work placement, employer services, Human Resources and more. Your degree also gains you part-qualifications for advisory services in Professional Counselling, CaseManagement and Occupational Rehabilitation. This paves the way for entry into activity level III.
After studying, there is a wide variety of further qualifications open to you, as to all BA employees, such as a Master degree in Labour Market-oriented Counselling.
Entry to both Bachelorprogrammes can be obtained with the following school-leaving qualifications:
- Allgemeine Hochschulreife (general higher education entry qualification), ≤ 2.9 average grade
- Fachgebundene Hochschulreife (subject-linked higher education entry qualification), ≤ 2.4 average grade
- Fachhochschulreife (university of applied sciences entry qualification), ≤ 2.4 average grade
- entry authorisation recognised as equivalent by law or by the corresponding authorities

Admission to degree programmes are decided in many steps of a selection procedure. Professionally qualified individuals may also be eligible for university admission under the conditions laid out in § 59 (1) to (3) of the State Higher Education Act of Baden-Württemberg.
Before beginning their studies, students sign a training contract for the dual study programme with their local employment agency.The application process for the degree programme, which starts from the beginning of September every year, is carried out by the regional employment agencies, and generally starts one year before.
Please apply online for one of the advertised study places through the BA application portal at only one employment agency close to your home. It is not possible to apply directly to the university.The following documents are required for application:
- a convincing covering letter
- detailed CV
- copies of school reports (years 11, 12 and 13)
- copies of any other reports (e.g. work experience)
- if applicable, a copy of your disability card or proof of equal status
